DIGICEL BEGINS CHRISTMAS VISITS
December 5th 2009 - Digicel to celebrate Christmas with the less fortunate all over PNGSaturday December 5th 2009 – Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: Digicel, PNG’s Bigger, Better Network, in conjunction with the Digicel Foundation and WeCARe Foundation today hosted an early Christmas picnic with over 500 children from Port Moresby.
Held in the Botanical Gardens, the Christmas picnic is the first of many surprises Digicel has planned for children throughout the country who are less fortunate this Christmas.
Between December 5th and 20th Digicel is bringing Christmas to many children across the country.
Founder and Chairman of the WeCARe Foundation Father John Glynn said during the Christmas Picnic: “This is a special Christmas treat for the many children from settlements and streets who are orphaned, abandoned, neglected and who feel rejected and unloved. WeCARe Foundation strives to create a vision where children and women in these situations through support and care can become, good, decent, valued and productive citizens of PNG.”
Digicel CEO John Mangos and a member of the Digicel Foundation Board said “Today’s Christmas picnic is the beginning of Digicel’s mission to bring Christmas to more than 1,000 children all over Papua New Guinea. The children are from the 25 Community Learning Centres around the country that Digicel Foundation established during its first year of operations.
“We want to make this Christmas a special occasion for all those children who may not get a chance to celebrate otherwise. We will do our best to put a smile on every child’s face this Christmas and the Digicel Santa and his helpers will be on hand with a bag full of surprises for all the children,” Mr. Mangos said.
Digicel Christmas visitations will include all centres where Digicel Foundation has launched a CLC in and around Port Moresby, Mt Hagen, Lae and Goroko.
The Foundation is working closely with Government, non-government organizations, churches and the private sector to get the Foundation’s projects in the areas of Basic Education infrastructure and Family Support related infrastructure off the ground. To date the Foundation has funded 34 Community Learning Centres, 5 school infrastructure projects, two Mobile Clinic’s, a Meri Seif Haus (Women’s Shelter) at 2 Mile settlement in Lae and a Family Support Centre for Maprik District Hospital (East Sepik). The Foundation is also currently engaged in the construction of two primary school building projects and a second Meri Seif Haus. By improving facilities in the areas of basic education and family support the Digicel Foundation strives to empower communities which in turn will endow them with a positive outlook for their future.
