Digicel Foundation launches Mobile Clinic
Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 – Port Moresby: the Digicel PNG Foundation launched its first Mobile Clinic in partnership with Foursquare Church today.
The Mobile Clinic, a Land Cruiser Ambulance fully fitted out as a health clinic, will be operated by Foursquare Church’s medical team. As part of their Health Outreach Programme the team will visit the rural villages in Central Province to provide the communites with essential health services such as immunization of infants, treatment for diseases (TB, malaria etc.), HIV/AIDS testing, treatment and counselling, health awareness and dental treatment. These services wil be provided free of charge.
The Digicel PNG Foundation funded this very first Mobile Clinic at a total cost of K150,000. Through this project the Digicel Foundation aims to support those communities in the more remote areas of Central Province with basic services that they need to help strengthen and develop their communities.
Pastor Bill Page, Mission Representative for the Foursquare Church in PNG, speaking at the launch, said: “This is a very exciting new project for the Foursquare Church and something we have been dreaming about for a long time. The Mobile Clinic is an innovative solution to the issue of how to effectively bring basic services to the people in the more remote areas of the Province, and to the settlements around Port Moresby. We thank Digicel Foundation for their generosity and look forward to working with them in the roll out of more projects that will bring benefits to the needy people of PNG.
Foursquare Church operates two health clinics; one at Kaugere and another at Kila Kila in Port Moresby. Their medical team consists of over 38 medical staff including 20 nurses, 2 Health Extension Officers and a Doctor and operates 5 days a week serving the poorest squatter settlements in POM city, treating up to 8,000 people monthly at a modest charge.
Peter Aitsi, Chairman of the Digicel PNG Foundation concluded: “This is a very special event for us. It is the first time that the Foundation has funded a Mobile Clinic that will benefit the people out in the Province that are most in need of basic health services. It will provide them with a regular health service which will prevent children from getting diseases, help mothers to give birth whilst also giving communities general health and hygiene awareness training. We especially thank Foursquare Church for their continued support and vision in creating this service.”
Since the launch of the Foundation last year October, 26 Community Learning Centres, 4 school building projects, a Meri Seif Haus and the first Mobile Clinic have been established. Over the next year the Foundation plans to fund many more projects that aim at supporting communities through education thereby helping them to become more self-reliant in the future.
