DIGICEL FOUNDATION LAUNCHES SECOND MOBILE CLINIC
December 4th 2009 - Rural communities in Enga province to benefit from health servicesFriday, December 4th, 2009 – Wabag: the Digicel PNG Foundation launched its second Mobile Clinic in partnership with Foursquare Church today.
The Mobile Clinic, a Land Cruiser Ambulance fully fitted out as a health clinic, will be operated by Foursquare Church’s medical team based at the newly established Tsak rural hospital in Wapenamanda. As part of their Health Outreach Programme the team will visit the rural villages in Enga Province to provide the communities with essential health services such as immunization of infants, treatment for diseases (TB, malaria etc.), HIV/AIDS testing, treatment and counseling, health awareness and dental treatment. These services will be provided free of charge.
The Digicel PNG Foundation funded the Mobile Clinic at a total cost of K150,000. Through this project the Digicel Foundation aims to support those communities in the more remote areas of Enga Province with basic services that they need to help strengthen and develop their communities.
Reverend Timothy Tipitap, National President for the Foursquare Church in PNG, speaking at the launch, said: “This is a very exciting time for Foursqaure Church and our medical team based at Tsak rural hospital. The Mobile Clinic is an innovative solution to the issue of how to effectively bring basic services to the people in the more remote areas of Enga Province. We thank Digicel Foundation for their generosity and look forward to working with them in the roll out of more projects that will bring benefits to the needy people of PNG.”
Foursquare Church operates Tsak rural hospital and services more than 40,000 people in the area. The medical team at the hospital consists of 4 community health workers and regular visiting doctors from the provincial hospital as well as from overseas The rural clinic treats an average of 1,500 patients a month at a modest charge.
Peter Aitsi, Chairman of the Digicel PNG Foundation concluded: “This is the second Mobile Clinic that the Digicel Foundation is funding to reach out to the people in the rural areas providing them with much needed basic health services. It will provide them with a regular health service which will prevent children from getting diseases, help mothers to give birth whilst also giving communities general health and hygiene awareness training. We especially thank Foursquare Church for their continued support and vision in creating and operating this essential service.”
The Foundation is working closely with Government, non-government organizations, churches and the private sector to get the Foundation’s projects in the areas of Basic Education infrastructure and Family Support related infrastructure off the ground. To date the Foundation has funded two Mobile Clinic’s (one for NCD , Central and Gulf provinces), a Family Support Centre for Maprik District Hospital (East Sepik), a Meri Seif Haus (Women’s Shelter) at 2 Mile settlement in Lae, 5 school infrastructure projects and 34 Community Learning Centres nationwide. The Foundation is also currently engaged in the construction of two primary school building projects and a second Meri Seif Haus. By improving facilities in the areas of basic education and family support the Digicel Foundation strives to empower communities which in turn will endow them with a positive outlook for their future.
