SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN RECEIVE NEW CLASSROOM

March 5th 2010 - Digicel Foundation funds new classroom

Friday, March 5th, 2010 – Port Moresby: today Digicel Foundation launched the 39th Community Learning Centre (CLC) at the Hohola Red Cross Special Education Resource Centre in Port Moresby.

The Hohola Red Cross Special Education Resource Centre is one of the few schools in the country that caters for the special needs of young children with a learning disability in PNG. The school has an enrollment of 60 pre- and elementary school children and the numbers are rapidly increasing as awareness about the special services this school has to offer spreads. As so many other schools across the country this school is in desperate need of more classroom space. The Digicel Foundation recognized their need and came to their aid through the funding of a new kit structure classroom worth K15,000. It is the Digicel Foundation’s strong belief that Education should be accessible to all children and especially those that have “special” needs.

The classroom was officially opened today and contains a library with 300 books, kindly donated by Hope Worldwide, as well as a school blackboard and slates. Digicel Foundation also donated 25 Back to School packs for the lucky pre school children who will be making this classroom their new home.

The Digicel Foundation partners with Government, Non Government , Church and the private sector to establish their projects which are focused on the funding of community based educational and family support related facilities.

This is only the beginning as the Digicel Foundation has earmarked another nine elementary schools across the country for new kit structure classrooms to give them more space to accommodate for the increasing number of elementary school children enrolling in these schools. The kit structure is an efficient and high quality solution which can be constructed in a few days and transported even to places where there is no road access. The  Digicel Foundation has to date launched seven kit structure elementary classrooms and will launch a total of 18 elementary classrooms by the end of March 2010.

To date the Digicel Foundation has funded 39 Community Learning Centres, five  primary school and six elementary school infrastructure projects, two Mobile Health Clinics and two Meri Seif Haus projects. The first Family Support Centre at Maprik District Health Centre, co-funded with UNICEF, has been completed and will be launched on March 12th. The Digicel Foundation is currently engaged in the construction of another five primary and four elementary school building projects, two Meri Seif Haus facilties and three Family Support Centre projects.
